Introduction
If you are in an Atal Tinkering Lab, you already have Arduino boards, sensors, and tools. The hard part is picking a problem that feels real — not a copy-paste science fair model.
These 10 ideas come from everyday school life: dusty bins after lunch, dry garden plants on Monday, missing pliers in ATL, sudden rain, and overflowing tanks. Build small. Show proof. Tell a clear story.
Quick tip before you start
Talk to one real user (peon, gardener, ATL in-charge, class monitor). Ask what wastes time every week. Then build for that person. That single interview makes your ATL Marathon / exhibition story stronger.
10 Realistic Project Ideas
1. Corridor Smart Dustbin Fill Alert

Figure 1: Corridor Smart Dustbin Fill Alert
- Problem: School dustbins overflow and smell before the peon notices — especially after lunch.
- Idea: Put an ultrasonic sensor under the lid. When trash is near full, a bright LED outside the bin blinks so cleaning staff can empty it on the next round.
- What to build in ATL: Ultrasonic HC-SR04 + Arduino Nano + LED/buzzer + old dustbin lid mount. Cost roughly ₹400–700 if you reuse scrap.
- Why this works: You see this every day in school. Judges like problems that are local and visible.
2. School Garden Soil-Moisture Waterer

Figure 2: School Garden Soil-Moisture Waterer
- Problem: Weekend plants dry out, or someone overwaters and roots rot.
- Idea: Soil moisture probe checks dryness. If soil is dry, a small pump waters for 20–30 seconds, then stops. Optional: only water in morning hours.
- What to build in ATL: Soil moisture sensor + relay + 5V pump + Arduino + bottle reservoir. ATL already has most of these parts.
- Why this works: Simple automation with clear before/after photos of plant health.
3. ATL Tool Checkout Board

Figure 3: ATL Tool Checkout Board
- Problem: Screwdrivers, pliers, and multimeters go missing after periods. Teachers waste time searching.
- Idea: Tag every tool. Students scan/tap a card before taking and returning. A screen or sheet shows what is still out and who took it.
- What to build in ATL: RFID kit or barcode stickers + Arduino/ESP32 + simple display or Google Sheet via ESP. Start with paper + RFID for a working prototype.
- Why this works: Solves a real ATL pain point — mentors and in-charges instantly get it.
4. Blind-Corner Safety Beep Near School Gate

Figure 4: Blind-Corner Safety Beep Near School Gate
- Problem: Cycles and scooters turn a sharp corner near the gate and almost hit juniors.
- Idea: Ultrasonic or PIR on the blind wall triggers a soft beep + yellow light for 3 seconds when someone approaches from the other side.
- What to build in ATL: 2× ultrasonic or PIR + Arduino + LED strip + small speaker. Mount on wall with battery/solar pack.
- Why this works: Safety projects feel serious. Film a short before/after video at your real gate.
5. Stuffiness Reminder to Open Classroom Windows

Figure 5: Stuffiness Reminder to Open Classroom Windows
- Problem: After two periods with closed windows, the class feels sleepy and air feels heavy.
- Idea: A small CO2/air-quality sensor on the window sill lights orange when air is stuffy — a polite reminder to open windows for 5 minutes. No loud alarm.
- What to build in ATL: MQ135 or CO2 module + Arduino + RGB LED. Calibrate roughly in open air vs closed room.
- Why this works: Health + comfort. Easy demo: closed room reading vs after opening windows.

6. Rain Alert for Open Windows & Sports Bags

Figure 6: Rain Alert for Open Windows & Sports Bags
- Problem: Sudden rain wets open windows, lab papers, and sports kits left in the corridor.
- Idea: Rain sensor outside triggers a corridor buzzer/LED so monitors can shut windows and move bags quickly.
- What to build in ATL: Rain sensor module + Arduino + buzzer + long wires or wireless ESP pair for outdoor unit.
- Why this works: Monsoon is real life. One rainy-day test video sells the idea.
7. Sick-Room Medicine Fridge Temperature Alarm

Figure 7: Sick-Room Medicine Fridge Temperature Alarm
- Problem: School sick-room fridge door left ajar or power cut can spoil medicines/vaccines kept for first aid camps.
- Idea: DS18B20 or DHT inside fridge. If temperature goes out of safe range for 10 minutes, LED + buzzer outside alerts the staff room.
- What to build in ATL: Temp sensor + Arduino + buzzer + battery backup. Log readings on SD card if you want extra marks for data.
- Why this works: Clear safety use-case. Show a graph of temperature during a test.
8. Cycle-Stand Dynamo USB Phone Charger

Figure 8: Cycle-Stand Dynamo USB Phone Charger
- Problem: Many students cycle to school and phones die by afternoon — no free charging point.
- Idea: A fixed stand where pedalling a spare wheel/dynamo gives USB 5V output through a regulator. Even 10–15 minutes helps in an emergency.
- What to build in ATL: Bicycle dynamo or DC motor-as-generator + bridge rectifier + capacitor + 5V buck + USB socket. ATL mechanical + electronics mix.
- Why this works: Fun to demo. Measure voltage/current while pedalling for science marks.

9. Midday-Meal Leftover Weighing Board

Figure 9: Midday-Meal Leftover Weighing Board
- Problem: Nobody knows how much food is wasted each day, so the kitchen keeps cooking the same excess.
- Idea: A sturdy board with a cheap load cell under the leftover bucket. Display shows daily leftover kg. After 2 weeks, share chart with kitchen staff.
- What to build in ATL: Load cell + HX711 + Arduino + OLED/LCD. Calibrate with 1 kg weight. Keep wiring food-safe and washable top.
- Why this works: Data changes behaviour. Perfect for ATL Marathon sustainability angle.
10. Rooftop Tank Overflow Alarm

Figure 10: Rooftop Tank Overflow Alarm
- Problem: When the motor fills the tank, water overflows and wastes thousands of litres before anyone runs upstairs.
- Idea: Float switch near the top of the tank rings a loud buzzer near the motor switch / office so someone shuts the pump in time.
- What to build in ATL: Float switch + long wire + buzzer + 9V/adapter. Optional: auto-cut relay for the pump (with teacher/electrician help).
- Why this works: Every school/home understands water waste. Cheap and rock-solid demo.
